Summary from the Ontario Heritage Foundation's website
In 1804, 15 families from Scotland settled near the St. Clair River in a community sponsored by Lord Selkirk. Flooding, malaria and the War of 1812 took their toll and by 1818 the few settlers who remained had moved to higher ground.
