Sandwich First Baptist Church was founded by freedom seekers who followed the Underground Railroad to Canada. Until 1847, when they built a small log cabin, the congregation worshipped in homes and outdoors. The present church was constructed from lumber hewed by hand and bricks moulded from Detroit River clay.
