Summary from the Ontario Heritage Foundation's website
First Baptist Church traces its origins back to the 1840s when the local Black community was established. During the 1850s, the Refugee Home Society purchased lands around Puce to sell to freedom seekers from the American South. Initially, Baptists and Methodists worshipped in the same building, but by the early 1860s the Puce Baptists had their own church.
