Summary from the Ontario Heritage Foundation's website
In 1816, William Dickson, a Niagara merchant and politician, purchased a large parcel of land on which his agent Absalom Shade built a sawmill and grist-mill. The community that developed around these enterprises was originally called Shade's Mills but was later renamed in honour of Dickson's friend, John Galt.
