Summary from the Ontario Heritage Foundation's website
Named after their original destination in Venezuela, the La Guayra settlers were a group of Scottish emigrants who, unable to adapt to the tropical climate of South America, came to Upper Canada in 1827. John Galt, the superintendent of the Canada Company, helped them settle in and around Guelph.
