Plaque Text

The Baptists of Haldimand and Cramahe townships united in 1798 to form a church. The War of 1812 seriously interrupted its growth but, in March 1817, the members from Haldimand felt strong enough to establish their own church. In 1818 the Rev. Peleg Card, a native of New York State, became their first pastor. This building, the oldest surviving Baptist chapel in Ontario, was erected in 1824.

Hi, Wayne! Sorry I didn't answer before now, but would really welcome any additional information that you have. I also have information that might be of use to you, but need to ask the author's permission before giving it :-) My email address is nsayed6266 at aol.com, when and if you have time. You've done such a beautiful job here! Also, don't know if you have the Wicklow Baptist Church records that are on line at Michael Stephenson's site. They are such a fit with your information. I found Roger Merrill there, strengthening a link between the Alpena, MI Merrills and those of Northumberland Co. Don't you love it when that happens?!
Thanks! Nancy Merrill Sayed

I would love to know more about the Wicklow Baptist Church. My 5x ggrandfather, Roger Merrill, belonged to this church. I've been unable to find any information other than that which is on the Ontario records (LDS) for the latter part of the church years. Thanks so much for sharing these pictures and this history with us! My email address is nsayed6266 at aol.com

Rev. Peleg Card was on the frontier most of his life after being born in Amenia, Dutchess County, New York. He attended Seminary near Boston where he met his wife, Mary Williams. The 1800 New York Census places him in Herkimer County east of Rome, New York. Then in 1804 he went to Denmark, Lewis County, New York only fifty miles from the Canadian border. Peleg and family moved to Grafton, Ontario forty miles west of Bellville about 1811. Here Peleg, Mary and several of their children and grandchildren are buried in the Card family plot, Farifview Cemetery.
