Born in Lambeth, John By served in Canada with the Royal Engineers (1802-11) reconstructing fortifications at Quebec. Later, he oversaw construction of the Rideau Canal, which was completed in 1832. The eastern terminus of the canal was called Bytown and later named Ottawa.
