Plaque summary from the Ontario Heritage Trust's website
A Scotsman of both literary and business talents, Galt was appointed the first superintendent of the Canada Company in 1826 and founded Guelph the following year as the company's headquarters. He proved more popular with the settlers he helped to locate in the Huron Tract than with his business colleagues and in 1829 he was discharged. He returned to Britain and successfully pursued a literary career.
