Born and raised in Guelph, Johnson made his operatic debut in Italy in 1912 (billed as Eduardo di Giovanni). He sang leading tenor roles in major opera houses in Europe and North America and from 1935 to 1950 was general manager of the Metropolitan Opera Association in New York. Throughout his life, he worked to promote and encourage Canadian musicians.
